Tous les textes publiés dans l'ouvrage parlent directement de l'œuvre de Jean-Michel Berthelot. La première partie, " Sociologie de Jean-Michel Berthelot ", rassemble les contributions restituant des traits de son œuvre à l'aide d'études de cas précis ou de panoramas plus larges, et balise des domaines de recherche dans lesquels il s'est illustré : sociologie de l'éducation, du corps, des sciences, épistémologie des sciences sociales. La deuxième partie rend compte des perspectives ouvertes par ses travaux et (...) de la manière dont des chercheurs ont mis en œuvre ses réflexions pour leurs propres recherches. Il s'agit donc de restituer la façon dont on peut faire de la sociologie " avec " Jean-Michel Berthelot - à l'aide de ses travaux et des jalons qu'ils posent. La troisième partie est biographique en restituant l'itinéraire académique, intellectuel et humain de Berthelot, que ce soit son parcours universitaire et social, notamment à l'ENS durant mai 68, ou encore sa période " toulousaine " où sa carrière universitaire a débuté et qui en constitue une partie essentielle. Dirigé par Jean-Christophe Marcel et Olivier Martin, cet ouvrage rassemble les contributions de collaborateurs, d'anciens étudiants ou de proches collègues de Jean-Michel Berthelot. (shrink)

Mon intention n'est pas de proposer ici un programme d'action ni un manifeste de pensée. Je voudrais seulement tenter de déterminer quel devrait être le rôle de la philosophie au Canada: sa place dans l'édification de cet immense pays qui est le nôtre, sa fonction dans la préparation et le développement d'une culture authentiquement canadienne.

Aucun des termes tels que sophia ou sagesse, gnose, ontologie, henologie, theologie, philosophie transcendantale, dialectique, deconstruction, qui tous ont un rapport certain avec la metaphysique, n'egale son prestige et son pouvoir d'evocation. Dans le sens large entrevu ici, est metaphysique toute enquete argumentee, demarche ou approche dont la destination expresse est l'etablissement ou la decouverte des premiers principes ou des premieres causes de l'etre, du connaitre ou de l'agir Le questionnement metaphysique presente donc une figure hautement typique de notre tradition, (...) moins assuree que la theologie dont elle dispute pourtant l'ampleur de vue, plus indeterminee que la science dont elle veut neanmoins partager l'ideal de rigueur et d'intelligibilite. Malgré la notoriété de ses chercheurs, les études sur la science menées par la philosophie, l'histoire et la sociologie constituent un champ de recherche souvent méconnu. Or il s'agit d'un domaine décisif. En témoigne le succès des grandes revues de vulgarisation scientifique comme La Recherche ou Pour la science, dont les articles et les dossiers sont le plus souvent confiés à des philosophes, des historiens ou des sociologues des sciences. En insistant plus particulièrement sur les trente dernières années, l'ouvrage tente (...) de resituer la genèse, le devenir, l'organisation et le mode de travail de cette activité particulière " doublement " scientifique, par sa visée et son objet. Pour la première fois, il présente un tableau détaillé et varié d'une activité de recherche qui mobilise des chercheurs de formation et d'horizons très divers. Cet article cherche à mettre en lumière les modalités complexes qui, dans la théologie morale catholique, unissent pratique sexuelle et violence. Il le fait en prenant comme référence un moment spécifique (les années 1820) dans un espace singulier (la France malthusienne). Le théologien Jean-Baptiste Bouvier, acteur principal de cette réflexion, prenant acte de la réalité de la limitation des naissances par coitus interruptus, propose la fiction vraie de la non-culpabilité de la femme à laquelle son mari impose sa pratique (...) par la force. Or ce scénario, élaboré pour déculpabiliser les femmes mariées fidèles à l’Église, va beaucoup plus loin que son aspect circonstanciel. En effet il déconstruit un rigorisme doctrinal, officiel en France depuis 1700, selon lequel, en cas de viol, une part de responsabilité – et donc de culpabilité – est imputée à la femme si elle ne s’oppose pas de manière visible, audible et tangible à la violence qu’elle subit. L’objet de cet article est de publier une traduction inédite en français moderne avec, en regard, le fragment original, décrit en détail par Ernest Langlois en 1913, et d’en donner une analyse linguistique et philologique. Ce fragment ouvre d’intéressantes perspectives pour la compréhension de la littérature arthurienne tardive. This paper’s purpose is to publish a modern French unpublished translation opposite the original fragment, described in detail by Ernest Langlois in 1913, and to provide a linguistic and philological analysis. During the formative years for Dialogue, I was absent from Canada on sabbatical leave, and so my memory of the initial moves by the officers and directors of the Canadian Philosophical Association towards publishing their own scholarly review is faded by time and fuzzily out of focus. One thing stands out clearly and should be spoken of first. The initial impetus and steady pressure towards publication came from the francophone members. Father Jean Langlois spoke of this in his (...) brief “liminaire”, introducing the first number in June 1962: “Réalisation d'un projet dont nous rêvions depuis la fondation de notre groupement, il y a quatre ans.” It had been no idle or empty dream. Money had been earned and set aside for just this purpose by one of our senior francophone members and was available towards the start-up production costs. A francophone co-editor had been chosen well before his anglophone colleague was sounded out. The motion committing the Association to the venture was proposed and seconded, in Montreal, by members from the universities of Montreal and of Ottawa. (shrink)

Jean-Paul Grandjean – devenu de Fouchy en 1743, lorsqu’il est nommé secrétaire perpétuel de l’Académie des sciences – s’est formé à l’astronomie auprès de J.-N. Delisle, avant le départ de ce dernier pour la Russie. Fouchy installe bientôt chez lui un observatoire qu’il équipe d’instruments du constructeur Claude Langlois, et où il mène différentes observations. Le domaine d’intérêt principal de Fouchy concerne les «machines»; il s’agit entre autres d’appareils venant équiper les quarts-de-cercle pour en faciliter l’emploi. Comme secrétaire (...) perpétuel, il demeure en fonction jusqu’en 1776 et, à ce titre, il prononce de nombreux éloges dont une dizaine sont relatifs à des astronomes. (shrink)

A cursory review of the philosophy of sport readily reveals that it is dominated by Anglo-Saxon analytical philosophical milieux, in the departments of philosophy and kinesiology, the centers of bioethics, and the faculties of health around the world. In France, however, with the exception of a few researchers working in the philosophy or sport, and within an analytical paradigm, the development of the subject has gone almost unnoticed. By contrast, the discipline of history of sport clearly moved away from philosophy (...) in France with the establishment of a separate field of study based on the Anglo-Saxon model from the work pioneer of Pierre Arnaud developed by Thierry Terret and other sports historians. Nevertheless, in French universities, faculties of philosophy have not been open to research in the philosophy of the body. The philosophy of sport is not taught as such in French Universities even if our generation pursues ways opened by Jacques Ulmann, Bernard Jeu, Bernard Guillemain, Michel Bernard, Jean-Michel Berthelot, Gilbert Andrieu, Bertrand During, André Rauch, Marie-Hélène Brousse, Françoise Labridy, and Georges Vigarello, among others, through their reflections on the philosophy of the body. This article discusses the influence of some of these authors, and especially of Georges Gusdorf, Michel Foucault, and Georges Snyders on the nature and prospects for the philosophy of sport in France. This review seeks to present a comprehensive picture of recent discussions in the social sciences of the anticipated impact of AI on the world of work. Issues covered include: technological unemployment, algorithmic management, platform work and the politics of AI work. The review identifies the major disciplinary and methodological perspectives on AI’s impact on work, and the obstacles they face in making predictions. The problem of the intensification and remission of qualities was a crux for philosophical, theological, and scientific thought in the Middle Ages. It was raised in Antiquity with this remark of Aristotle: some qualities, as accidental beings, admit the more and the less. Admitting more and less is not a trivial property, since it belongs neither to every category of being, nor to every quality. Rather it applies only to states and dispositions such as virtue, to affections of bodies such (...) as heat and sweetness, and to affections of soul such as anger. However, the property of admitting more and less was a matter of importance for the qualitative physics that had reigned up to about the time of Descartes, a physics which was concerned with concepts such as heat, coldness, lightness, heaviness, and so on. Emotion Review, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 244-253, October 2022. This article is a précis of my 2019 monograph The World-Directedness of Emotional Feeling: On Affect and Intentionality. The book engages with a growing trend of philosophical thinking according to which the felt dimension and the intentionality of emotion are unified. While sympathetic to the general approach, I argue for a reconceptualization of the form of intentionality that emotional feelings are widely thought to possess and, accordingly, of the kind of (...) role they play in our mental lives. More specifically, I argue that the way we feel in having an emotion is not a perception-like awareness of evaluative properties of its object, but instead constitutes the taking of a stand or position on this object in light of its evaluative properties. Universal Logic is not a new logic, but a general theory of logics, considered as mathematical structures. The name was introduced about ten years ago, but the subject is as old as the beginning of modern logic: Alfred Tarski and other Polish logicians such as Adolf Lindenbaum developed a general theory of logics at the end of the 1920s based on consequence operations and logical matrices. The subject was revived after the flowering of thousands of new logics during the last (...) thirty years: there was a need for a systematic theory of logics to put some order in this chaotic multiplicity. This book contains recent works on universal logic by first-class researchers from all around the world. On imagine facilement la manière dont l'autodidacte userait de ce vocabulaire de Sartre. Adoration is the second volume of the Deconstruction of Christianity, following Dis-Enclosure. The first volume attempted to demonstrate why it is necessary to open reason up not to a religious dimension but to one transcending reason as we have been accustomed to understanding it; the term "adoration" attempts to name the gesture of this dis-enclosed reason. -/- Adoration causes us to receive ignorance as truth: not a feigned ignorance, perhaps not even a "nonknowledge," nothing that would attempt to justify the (...) negative again, but the simple, naked truth that there is nothing in the place of God, because there is no place for God. The outside of the world opens us in the midst of the world, and there is no first or final place. Each one of us is at once the first and the last. Each one, each name. And our ignorance is made worse by the fact that we do not know whether we ought to name this common and singular property of all names. We must remain in this suspense, hesitating between and stammering in various possible languages, ultimately learning to speak anew. -/- In this book, Jean-Luc Nancy goes beyond his earlier historical and philosophical thought and tries to think-or at least crack open a little to thinking-a stance or bearing that might be suitable to the retreat of God that results from the self-deconstruction of Christianity. Adoration may be a manner, a style of spirit for our time, a time when the "spiritual" seems to have become so absent, so dry, so adulterated. -/- The book is a major contribution to the important strand of attempts to think a "post-secular" situation of religion. In May 2000 a group of researchers, university teachers and publishers met to consider the impact of the new media for knowledge transmission on the intellectual world and listed the projects ongoing in France for publishing content electronically. Eighteen months later no one is able to say whether there will one day be a significant body of electronic publishing with French content. Such a transformation calls for a moment's consideration. So what has happened?
